The Faculty of Humanities and Natural Sciences at the University of Prešov in Prešov (FHPV PU) takes care of the quality of the study it provides. It has a well-developed electronic teacher evaluation system. The qualification structure of teachers ensures that the Faculty guarantees the accreditation of dozens of study programs and their variegated structure.

We offer an extraordinary combination of study programs within the different Faculties that no other university offers. You have a unique opportunity and it is up to you whether you choose a study of biology with physical education, geography with English language or ecology with physics. Biology
  • a) What am I going to study ?
    Biology. "Are you studying animals?"; "Do you dissect frogs?" These questions come to minds of most people when they are trying to imagine what studying Biology means. We will show you what the "Biology" is actually about. You can deal with botany, zoology, human biology, microbiology, molecular biology, and there is an immense variability in the possibilities of your future specialization. You will find that even though there are many biologists around you, each of you will be unique in your own way, because Biology represents diversity and variability. You will learn how and where you can gain new knowledge after the graduation so that you can always be "IN" and a be step ahead of your competition.

    b) Where am I going to study?
    Your studies will consist not only of a theory taught in modern and technically well-equipped classrooms, but you will also have many opportunities to use new laboratories and state-of-the-art technologies during your study. The lectures will be held by pedagogues who carry out actual research in Biology and their results are known worldwide.

    c) What activities can I participate in?
    There are number of possibilities that ensure that as a future successful biologist, you will never be bored. You will participate in many field practices and biological excursions, not only in our country but also abroad. You will also experience individual teamwork. You can as well engage in the research activities of the members of the department, or personally get to know a lot of interesting people through your participation in various scientific events, conferences or workshops. Moreover, if you want to experience something unique, there is an opportunity for you to travel for an internship / mobility at an institute or a university you choose yourself.

    d) Where will I find a job after my graduation?
    As a biologist, you can work in scientific-research teams, such as those which are a part of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, and also in research institutes related to agriculture, forestry, food, health, environment, or at universities anywhere in the world. You also have the opportunity to use the knowledge you acquired in specialized institutions that focus on field work, in environmentally and ecologically oriented workplaces, or in the state and private sectors with biologically oriented research and practice. Another, no less appealing option, is to become a teacher of relevant subjects at primary and secondary schools or at universities.

Ecology
  • a) What am I going to study?
    You will find out why deer has such nonsensically large antlers; what fish do when there is a shortage of males; what sort of gold diggers the females of red-backed shrikes are; how the pine trees kid with the birds that want to enjoy their seeds; how it really is with the global warming; why we are much more attractive in a red shirt; how to use the juice of black elderberry to make a solar cell; and even why a person walks on two legs.

    b) Where am I going to study?
    The lessons will be held in modern and technically well-equipped classrooms. Practical training for students is provided in highly-equipped laboratories. Practical experience will be gained during field exercises and excursions.

    c)What activities can I participate in?
    You will have a unique opportunity to travel and study through internships or mobilities at an institution or a university of your choice. You can participate in the research activities of the members of our department and travel along with them, for example to Kenya.  

    d) Where will I find a job after my graduation?
    As a scientist, you can work in research teams, or pursue your independent scientific project at different institutes of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, environmental research institutes, as well as research institutes related to agriculture and forestry, or at universities. The Department of Ecology has long been collaborating with the Soil Science and Conservation Research Institute, with the company Medicproduct, a.s., and several other environmentally and ecologically oriented institutions. As a pedagogue you will be able to find a job in teaching profession, where you can participate in creating didactical materials and tools for education, get employed in the fields related to free time activities for children and youth, or in the centers of free time.

Physics, Mathematics and Techniques
  • SECTION OF PHYSICS

    a) What am I going to study?
    What are the characteristics of the particles at the atomic level? How is it actually with the relativity? “Nonetheless, it moves“– what constitutes the universe and how does it functions?
    Teaching program – If you want to be in future a teacher of Physics, study at our Faculty the field of Physics in combination with another subject. We will answer your questions about the physical essences of different phenomena, clarify for you what astronomy and astrophysics are, and in addition, we will show you how to explain all these principles to other people.
    Engineering program – if you are attracted by Physics, but you do not want to become a teacher, apply to study our non-teaching program Physical engineering of progressive materials. You will learn in detail about the structure of materials and you will get acquainted with magnetic, thermodynamic, optical and thermal properties of materials. You will also gain technical skills while practicing at laboratories.

    b) Where am I going to study?
    The study of Physics is initially about the theoretical foundations of individual phenomena. The modern form of teaching using electronic learning aids is a standard practice in our physics education classrooms. The practical experimental part of the study is carried on in well-equipped laboratory classrooms. You will also have the opportunity to practice in the top scientific laboratories (Dynacool, Versalab) to explore the basic properties of solids under extreme conditions, so that you can link the theoretical foundations you have gained with the experimental practice.

    c) What activities can I participate in?
    Work on a scientific problem from the field of Physics through the ŠVOČ (Student scientific research activity), choose the topic of your final thesis and become a part of the scientific team. Help us organize popularization events, lectures on Physics, scientific conferences, or be part of the Open Door Day and take part in the Researchers' Nights. You can travel and study through the popular Erasmus program or choose from a rich offer of SAIA (Slovak Academic Information Agency). In the framework of the scientific research of the Department of Physics, you can participate in the international cooperation and gain important experience with the laboratory work of a Physicist – a scientist. We will also offer you additional foreign expert lectures as a part of the post-graduation studies.

    d) Where will I find a job after my graduation?
    After graduating from the Physics – teaching program, it is assumed that you will find work as a teacher at elementary or secondary schools, however, this study also gives you a prerequisite for continuing studying at the level of the doctoral studies in a selected field of Physics. When selecting a non-teaching study of Physical engineering of progressive materials, you may find a job in the manufacturing sphere, in the fields of product reliability or in the management of production processes. Alternatively, you can engage in developmental institutes, test centers, biological or biomedical workplaces, in the institutions dealing with the environment, organizations devoted to space research and its applications, or find a job as a technician in the field of experimental devices. The broad foundation you gain during the study will open up for you the opportunities in various fields related to electrical engineering and electronics.


    SECTION OF MATHEMATICS

    a) What am I going to study?
    According to one of the classics, "a well-explained Mathematics will not turn you into Einstein, but it can teach many people how to think logically," and this statement is also our main motto. In addition to fulfilling this goal, you will become familiar with useful lessons in Mathematics such as algebra, geometry, mathematical analysis, probability, statistics, numerical methods, but also with the theory and practice of teaching Mathematics. Other statements by famous mathematicians include that "the ultimate mission of Mathematics is to find a hidden order in the chaos that surrounds us" and also that "there is a law and a system in the world - and Mathematics is the key to this order." If you also feel that there is chaos all around you, it is a high time to put things in order.

    b) Where am I going to study?
    The mediation of mathematical knowledge requires predominantly a blackboard and a chalk in a classical classroom, however, this approach will be supplemented by modern teaching aids and electronic presentations, data projectors and interactive boards. Some disciplines, for example probability, statistics and numerical methods are taught in computer classrooms equipped with the necessary software. The first experience with the teaching process can be obtained during the pedagogical practice at the training schools collaborating with the University of Prešov.

    c) What activities can I participate in?
    During the course of your studies, it is possible for you to engage in scientific and professional activities under the guidance of experienced staff at our Department, and thus to establish your first contacts with science, the results of which will remain valid forever. The atmosphere of discovering new knowledge and establishing contacts with leading foreign experts can also be enjoyed through participating in the organization of summer schools, in which the Department is regularly involved. You can work with talented young people if you decide to take part in the preparation of the tasks and in organization of individual rounds of the Mathematical Olympiad and the Olympiad in Informatics, which is guaranteed by our Department on a professional basis within the Prešov administrative region. You can also study for a period of time abroad, by spending a certain period of study at a compatible university in a foreign country in the framework of various mobility programs.

    d) Where will I find a job after my graduation?
    The study of Mathematics creates prerequisites for finding a job not only in teaching Mathematics, but also in economic and statistical sciences, banking, informatics, physics and other natural and social sciences. Keep in mind that "Mathematics is the first science without which other sciences cannot be described" and "it deals with all other sciences, while there is no science to which mathematical applications would not apply." The graduates will mainly find positions as teachers of Mathematics at the second grade of primary schools and at all types of secondary schools. However, the study at our Faculty will provide you with the prerequisites for continuing with your studies at the level of doctoral studies in any of the fields of Mathematics, which will consequently enable you to find a job in a relevant field as a scientist.


    SECTION OF TECHNIQUES

    a) What am I going to study?
    Are you a type of a guy interested in technical things? Would you like to find out how the things are made or how they work? Do you also want to work with new technologies and be a model for other young technicians? We will help you acquire all the necessary skills needed to become the best instructor to your pupils. We will teach you how to master the basic knowledge of materials and technologies, electrical engineering and didactics. You will be able to work with 3D graphics, so that your teaching methods become fascinating, engaging and unique for your future pupils. You will be able to creatively apply novel ideas related to dealing with traditional and less frequently used materials during your classes, and thus you will take part in enriching the techniques surrounding us in general.

    b) Where am I going to study?
    You will find a computer lab for computer-aided learning, using the state-of-the-art interactive software and 3D technology, which will enable you to develop your competencies to work with information technologies in this field, as well as the laboratory of electrical engineering and automation with computer simulation and animation support. We offer you a specialized classroom for manual wood and plastics craftsmanship, specialized classrooms for wood and metal and plastics machining technology, where you will broaden and develop your practical skills and their creative application in the processing of various technical materials.

    c) What activities can I participate in?
    During your studies, you can engage in various activities, and we will create specific conditions for you within our Department. We will support your creative ideas, and help you materialize your technical visions. Students of the Technology teaching program will actively engage in the activities of the Department related to the organization of the Technology Olympiad which is aiming at pupils of primary schools. Students at our Faculty can take advantage of a wide range of exchange stays, within the popular Erasmus program, which will provide them with new experiences and knowledge.

    d) Where will I find a job after my graduation?
    Graduates from the Technology teaching program are – in addition to their corresponding professional and methodological readiness to teach the subject of technology, preferably at primary schools and at secondary vocational schools – also prepared for taking part in the management of extracurricular activities related to technology education at elementary and secondary schools and school centers of free time activities, work with youth in free time centers and in various interest associations, work in learning facilities with cultural and educational basis, work in the field of a lifelong learning, conduct methodological work in methodological centers, etc. Graduates will also be qualified experts in the field of technical sciences. They will have basic theoretical technological knowledge in the fields of mechanical engineering, wood processing and electrical engineering, and they will also have basic skills from the above-mentioned technical departments, which will enable them to apply for teaching positions at secondary vocational schools

Geography and Applied Geoinformatics
  • a) What am I going to study ?
    The Department provides the comprehensive education for young people who like to learn about new countries and who are interested in natural sciences and humanities. During your studies, you will learn about the principles of planetary geography, you find out how natural phenomena and patterns work, you will get to know which types of soils are the most fertile, or how the tornado works. During the lessons on regional geography, you will get "transferred" to different countries all around the world, and you will learn a lot about their inhabitants, their cultures, languages and religions. You will be taught to make yourself maps with the support of modern GIS technologies. During your studies, you will gain specialist knowledge about the territorial management and marketing, tourism and environmental planning, allowing you to have better chances to succeed at the labor market.

    b) Where am I going to study?
    Students have the opportunity to work in top-of-the-range laboratories of Geographic Information Systems and Earth Remote Sensing, which are part of the Competence Center. During the whole duration of the study, students are trained to create digital maps using GIS (Geographic Information Systems). During our annual geographic field exercises and mapping courses, our students have the opportunity to use top-of-the-line tools, such as GPS (Satellite Navigation System), laser rangefinders, and many other devices. The study is enriched by a number of field practices and excursions to foreign countries.

    c) What activities can I participate in?
    A part of the study is formed by student participation in domestic and foreign excursions, which are among the most attractive ones. The study is complemented by the extended professional practice in domestic and foreign regional development institutions, travel agencies, local governments, information centers, private companies, third sector organizations and others, in accordance with the particular specialization chosen by students during the course of their studies. Our students have a wide range of opportunities to travel abroad through different study programs (Erasmus, CEEPUS, EMUNI), and they can spend a semester or participate in a summer schools at renowned universities in Japan, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, France, Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Croatia, Austria, Slovenia, Serbia, Romania and many other countries. The geography student's life is also full of fun, since we regularly organize the Ball of Geographers, sports tournaments, and mountaineering events aimed for reaching of the highest mountain peaks.

    d) Where will I find a job after my graduation?
    As a teacher, you can find a job at primary and secondary schools or at universities. As a graduate of a non-teaching program of the study of Geography and Applied Geoinformatics, you can work in research teams, or pursue your independent scientific project at one of the institutes of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, or find a job at local and regional governments, regional development agencies, European Union institutions, statistical offices, travel agencies, marketing and advertising agencies, cartographic and geodetic institutions, environmental institutions and institutes dealing with nature conservation.

Pedagogy and Andragogy
  • PEDAGOGY

    a) What am I going to study?
    The main mission of the Department of Pedagogy is the education of qualified teachers for primary and secondary schools, as well as for universities. We deliver the high quality academic education and we offer a wide range of degrees, from bachelor undergraduate studies to post-graduate doctoral studies. The study is based on modern approaches in the pedagogical science and research. In cooperation with the training schools, our students are well trained and prepared for the current requirements and challenges of the pedagogical practice. The Department conducts an everyday full time teaching program in pedagogy in combination with other subjects, as well as the external, i.e. remote bachelor study of teaching of practical training, and external master studies of social pedagogy. Currently, the Department also offers an external bachelor study for educators.

    b) Where will I find a job after my graduation?
    Graduates from our study programs can find jobs as teachers, educators, vocational training masters, and educational counselors, coordinators for the prevention of social-pathological phenomena or as social pedagogues. It is also assumed that our graduates can find jobs in educational, cultural and social institutions, in different social care facilities for children and youth, orphanages, reeducation institutions, public administration bodies, or they can work in fields and on posts related to training activities in companies, where higher and pedagogically oriented education is required. At all of the above-mentioned posts, our graduates might be delegated to the positions of innovators, pedagogical managers, consultants, researchers, and creative employees, whose main target is to ensure the personal development of the employees of companies.


    ANDRAGOGY

    a) What am I going to study?
    We will teach you how to plan, build, organize, implement, and evaluate a training course; how to prepare and manage a lecture; how to draw up a dramaturgy plan; how to design animation activities; how to animate free time activities; how to formulate a research problem in the field of Andragogy and how to conduct research; how to master the basics of creating a personal management system in different organizations (focusing on planning, collecting, selecting, deploying, evaluating, remunerating and dismissing employees). You will also learn to effectively communicate with different stakeholders; to use diagnostic tools in Andragogy; and you will become able to advise the others in questions related their further education; you will be learn how to manage an e-learning course; and you will get acquainted with the problems related to the education and integration of Roma, as well as with the issues related with the education of senior citizens.

    b) Where am I going to study?
    The lessons will be held in modern and technically well-equipped classrooms. You will gain your practical experience through your participation in professional practices and excursions.

    c) What activities will I participate in?
    You will have a unique opportunity to travel for your internship / mobility at an institute or a university you choose yourself. You will experience teamwork. You will play educational games. You will organize a great andragogical evening for all andragogues. You will create an e-learning course.

    d) Where will I find a job after my graduation?
    You can work as a conceptual, managerial, organizational and executive worker in: human resources agencies, companies (taking care of human resources, corporate education and organization and implementation of business education); in various organizations focusing on social and educational work and care, targeting, for example, seniors, unemployed, disabled, socially excluded, convicted people, etc. You can find a job in civic associations and foundations; in cultural institutions (state, public administration, regional or local governments), educational institutions, museums, galleries, libraries, cinemas, theaters, media, community centers, in alternative culture institutions (clubs, cultural centers, festivals); in the areas related to research and training for the experts in the field of adult education/lifelong education, or in the areas of socio-educational intervention and counseling in further education. You can easily become an organizer of further education activities, education manager, human resources officer, designer of educational activities, animator, moderator, trainer, consultant, andragogical consultant, specialist in multimedia education programs, adult education editor, tutor, mentor, supervisor, or a specialist dealing with learning needs, methodology, etc.
